ZERO CENTRAL CIRCUS

Logo ZCC Black Crop.jpg

And for my next conjuring trick ……
I am creating a new Mobile Aerial Circus School !!!

Zero Central Circus will provide a positive, inclusive, non-competitive environment where young people and adults, are able to gain skills that promote physical fitness, alongside mind body coordination.

Learning and training aerial skills is fun and challenging. Inverting, balancing, spinning, climbing and twizzling aids in the development of physical and emotional stamina, building trust and confidence in the individual.

Zero Central Circus is starting out as a mobile aerial school, providing access to this activity in places which would not usually be able to accommodate it. The mobile aerial rigs we are using are suitable for learning foundational and transitional style moves, with a focus on building strength, flexibility and good technique.

Act Creation with Empress Stah

Sunday 16th February | 4:00pm to 6:00pm

‘Aerial Performance in CabarART’ is a workshop in creating contemporary cabaret with an aerial performance woven into it. This class will work on a group act creation piece, that will teach the fundamentals of performance design. The piece will act as an example that students can apply to their own acts, adopting techniques and structure of conceptualisation, realisation and application.

More Information

The workshop will commence with a talk from Empress Stah, describing her work and what she means by CabarART. Stah will show a video of one of her more infamous acts, and talk about where the inspiration came from and how the ideas were built up to create the finished pieces.

A week before the workshop commences, Stah will give all students one musical track, that will form the centre piece of the act that we will collectively create. Students will be asked to listen to the track, think about what it means to them and how they might interpret it as part of a performance. Students will then take this inspiration and choose a piece of costume and a prop or two, that they would like to work with on the day.

Students will be covering specifically how to build an aerial routine into a cabaret performance that may also have ground based moments. It will incorporate character, narrative and flow, with focus on creating something original, memorable and bookable.

Empress Stah will touch on the implications of rigging in different venues, how to make the act adaptable and how to ensure it is safe.

The second part of the workshop will involve a physical warm up and taking the ideas onto the floor and into the air. The small class size will mean each student will get their ideas heard and feel part of the group devising process.

This workshop is intended to give students solid ideas around creating an original act, it’s not an aerial tricks workshop, nor should they expect to leave with a finished piece.

Cost
$120 for a 2 hour workshop.

Pre-Requisites:
Ability to mount and dismount the hoop and perform at least 3 moves in a sequence, can be any level of moves. Experience of performing cabaret not required.

What to bring:
A costume or a piece of costume and up to 3 props (if you have any, otherwise an idea/mood board), a note pad and pen or digital equivalent.

What to Wear:
Something suitable for doing a physical warm up, working on the hoop and your costume inspiration.

‘A Prismatic intersection of Sex, Circus & Special Effects’ - The New York Times on the Lazer Beamz

Over the past 20 years, the musician and artist Peaches has created a comprehensive artistic oeuvre that focuses on music, performance and cross-media practices. She has made thousands of people dance in clubs with her electronic music, transgressively appropriating traditionally male-dominated genres such as rock, punk, heavy metal and rap. Her lyrics about social inequality, body images, gender equality and age read like postmodern poerty, and her concerts are highly explosive Gesamtkunstwerks, comprised of music, sound, fashion, visual- and live arts. Peaches is a master of the uncompromising popularization of the avant-garde and has, like this, implemented sex-positive feminism into the concert halls of this world.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of her stage debut, the Summer Festival is now showing the whole spectrum of her artistic universe: Peaches will open her first solo exhibition at the Kunstverein on August 9th; at KMH she will present three club nights; and with THERE'S ONLY ONE PEACH WITH THE HOLE IN THE MIDDLE, she creates a futuristic stage happening as a world premiere for the Summer Festival featuring 13 musicians, 10 performers and guests such as New York drag rapper Christeene and London-based aerial performer Empress Stah. Inspired by the variety shows of 1970s LGBTIQ* icons such as Bette Midler and Liza Minelli and with costumes by avant hair and fashion designer Charlie Le Mindu, Peaches catapults her vision of the past, present and future of queerfeminism onto the grand stage of the Kampnagel factory.

" Empress Stah performed at our European event and we were really impressed with the flexibility and professionalism of her performance. Stah was open to music and costume suggestions before the event, and designed her performances to suit with the needs of the audience. The aerial acrobat performance added to the delegate experience and judging by the number of photos and videos taken by the attendees they really enjoyed it!  "
